“Welcome to Stanton, whether you’re visiting in person or virtually—or you’re a resident, past or future. Stanton is a vibrant rural community in southwest Iowa, rooted in rich history and driven by forward-thinking values.
Surrounded by rolling hills, Stanton features beautiful natural landscapes, the Greenbelt Trail, and proximity to Viking Lake State Park. Our downtown is a hub for Swedish traditions, modern dining, and local events throughout the year—from Midsummer and Baseball Day to Santa Lucia in December.
With award-winning schools, affordable housing, childcare, senior care, and healthcare facilities nearby, Stanton offers a high quality of life for all ages. Local businesses, high-speed fiber internet, and a planned Technology Park contribute to a thriving economy and entrepreneurial spirit.

The History Of Stanton, Iowa
Stanton’s roots began with the vision of Sweden-born pastor Bengt Magnus Halland and the expansion of the railroad from Burlington to Omaha. The town was officially established in 1870, alongside the founding of Mamrelund Lutheran Church.
Throughout the decades, Stanton has remained resilient in the face of challenges like fires and economic shifts. The community has continually rebuilt, thanks to dedicated residents and local initiatives like the Stanton Area Industrial Foundation, established in 1970.
Agriculture has long been the economic backbone of Stanton, supporting local businesses and traditions alike. Our school system, local sports, and historic events all reflect the town’s commitment to preserving its heritage while embracing the future.
Celebrating Swedish Heritage and Traditions
Stanton proudly embraces its Swedish roots, showcased in unique cultural symbols and community celebrations:
Santa Lucia Day
Held each December, this festive tradition includes a community-selected queen, performances, and celebration of light.
Skona Maj
On May 31, local male choirs sing Swedish songs at various homes and landmarks around town.
The Dala Horse
Colorful wooden horse emblems, a tradition from Dalarna, Sweden, mark many homes in town.
Iconic Water Towers
Stanton’s water towers are local landmarks—a giant coffee pot and matching cup and saucer—paying tribute to Swedish coffee culture.
The Swedish Heritage & Cultural Center features artifacts, history, and a gift shop offering unique Swedish items.
Baseball and Stanton’s Community Spirit
Baseball is deeply woven into Stanton’s identity. Since 1939 (with few exceptions), Baseball Day has been a cherished annual tradition. The town has hosted national semi-pro games and welcomed MLB legends like Bob Feller and Bobby Richardson.
From championship high school football teams to long-standing town events, Stanton’s sports and recreation culture showcases its passion, pride, and sense of community.
